President’s Welcome Warmest Greetings to the friends and colleagues of DVI! On behalf of the Division on Visual Impairment (DVI), I enthusiastically welcome you to our website! It is just amazing that from a small group of teachers who gathered informally for a luncheon and discussion at the 1948 CEC Convention in Des Moines, Iowa, we have evolved to a membership of diversified activities and individuals. There is a commitment to share ever changing cutting edge practices to better support students who are blind or visually impaired. The far reaching arm of DVI encompasses infants, children, and youth in their quest for individualized academic achievement, integrated skill, and functional performance. The Division on Visual Impairment represents a low incidence population and, therefore, we find ourselves small in number as a division within CEC, compared to those with a greater disability prevalence. Even though the numbers are small, passion, creativity, tireless effort, knowledge, skill and mentorship permeate the workings of DVI. These are not minuscule characteristics and offerings. Recruitment and retention of members are key areas of focus for us. I do invite you to further experience DVI through a new membership, a renewal after absence, or as a committed DVIer. The values of membership will be quickly realized. Our news publication, the DVI Quarterly, captures the events, field updates, acknowledgements, and the opportunity to share and build your professional expertise, ultimately leading to the educational success of students who are blind or visually impaired. The DVI Quarterly also showcases special topical issues. Committee work within the Division on Visual Impairments focuses on a host of initiatives such as membership, diversity of people and tasks, financial stability, program planning for the CEC Annual Convention and Expo with a focus on DVI sponsored sessions, and the acknowledgement of Legends of the Field as well as brightly shining newcomers. DVI partners with families, colleagues within other divisions, university personnel, community agencies, and CEC headquarters staff to promote the current best and promising practices of the field. Along with sharing current knowledge, viewing the horizon keeps the division fresh! Thank you for visiting the DVI website. I am sure you will find yourself further perusing the Quarterly, field Position Papers, announcements and much more! It would be great to get feedback from you, so please do feel free to contact me or any of the DVI Board Members with thoughts, questions and/or reactions. Most sincerely, Phyllis Phyllis Thomas Simmons
